How to Restart and Verify an Umbraco Cloud Environment

Managing your Umbraco Cloud environment effectively includes understanding how to perform and confirm a successful environment restart. This guide provides step-by-step instructions to ensure smooth operations.

Overview

Restarting your Umbraco Cloud environment may be necessary for various reasons, such as troubleshooting or applying configuration changes. This article outlines how to:

  1. Restart an environment.

  2. Confirm that the restart was successful.

  3. Troubleshoot potential issues during the restart process.

How to Restart an Environment

To restart your Umbraco Cloud environment, follow these steps:

  1. Use the Cloud Dashboard: - Log in to the Umbraco Cloud dashboard. - Select the environment you wish to restart. - Locate and click the "Restart" button.

  2. Admin Assistance: - If you are unable to restart the environment yourself, contact an authorized admin to complete the restart on your behalf.

How to Verify a Successful Restart

Once you have initiated the restart, use the following methods to confirm it has completed successfully:

  1. Check Logs in the Backoffice: - Navigate to the Umbraco backoffice. - Review logs for entries indicating that the application has restarted or for relevant application start messages.

  2. Review the Cloud Portal: - Log in to the Umbraco Cloud portal. - Access the "Availability and Performance" section for the environment. - Look for any changes or updates indicating the restart has been successfully executed.

Troubleshooting When the Restart Fails

If the above steps do not resolve your issue or if the restart fails to reflect successfully:

  1. Ensure your user account has the necessary permissions to restart the environment.

  2. Confirm stable network connectivity during the process.

  3. Contact Umbraco support or your project’s administrator for further assistance.

New Feature on Umbraco Cloud: Start / Stop Website

Since march/2026, you can find Start and Stop options in the environment context menu (the three-dot menu) on the project overview page. Stopping an environment fully takes the website offline. It won't be accessible until you start it again.

Both actions will ask you to confirm before proceeding.

The environment status indicator will also turn grey when an environment is stopped, so you can see at a glance which ones are running.
